The beginning of the trail crosses over a footbridge and then crosses a small stream through a grove of Eucalyptus trees. The 0.8 mile trail gradually ascends through a lush rainforest ending at a viewing area set back from the base of the falls. There is a low rock wall and suspended cable with signs indicating the danger of landslide and instructing hikers to not go beyond that point. Approximately 50 feet from the viewing area there is a marked trail to the left. This is Aihualama Trail, which switchbacks up the ridge, through bamboo, offering views of Honolulu and Manoa Valley. Aihualama Trail is not suitable for novice hikers. There was a landslide next to the waterfall in January of 2002. A viewing area with a bench has been established that restricts access to the pool and waterfall, and from the side of the stream where the landslide occured. Signs are posted informing users of the trail terminus and of the potential danger of the area beyond. The trail ends at the viewing area. DO NOT GO BEYOND POSTED SIGNS AND CABLE AT THE END OF THE TRAIL- violators may be prosecuted.

Trail Information

  • Stay on the trail. Pack out at least what you pack in. No open fires.
  • The trail is not paved, but is instead covered in stones. It can get slippery in a few places, especially if it has recently rained. There are some sections with stairs, and a few parts where you have to climb up over boulders.
  • This hike is pretty easy, with lengths where you can run along it, and a huge waterfall at the very end.
  • There's gorgeous bamboo forest-y scenery all along the trail, but my favorite thing was at the waterfall in the end off Hike. If you don't like bugs definitely wear bug spray. Literally bugs flying everywhere since it's like a tropical forest type hike in the island.
  • The scene's are amazing. It's almost like you're an ant walking in a bush because of the tall trees and all the plants that you can only see on Oahu.
  • The parts of Jurassic Park and Hunger Games is filmed at some point during the initial stages of the hike. Definitely a must for all families if you are visiting Oahu.
  • Another factor that makes the Manoa Falls trail is a favorite hiking destination for many is that its highlight, the 150-foot (46 m) waterfall awaits after a relatively easy 45-minute walk up the mountain. The waterfall is bigger if it has recently rained. During the hot and dry summer months, it is hardly more than a small dribble.
  • The water cascades down from the mountain into a small pool. Even though it looks inviting, it is not recommended to swim in it because of the risk of rock slides, which have occurred in this area. Also, it isn't safe to drink the water because of leptospirosis contamination. But it is a nice spot for taking pictures
